Chapter 14

It was my week for strange phone calls from people I didn’t want to know. Shawna Greene called me at work wanting to meet with me. I tried to put her off, until she said that Gretchen Schneider suggested the meeting. I was tired of meeting with people on their turf, so I told her to come by the nursery at three o’clock.

When Greene arrived, she had Schneider with her. The two women appeared to be about the same age—Human early sixties—but that was always difficult to determine with magic users.

Schneider greeted me in German with a big smile, and I responded in the same language. Both women oohed and ahhed over the nursery, so I gave them a quickie tour, including a couple of the greenhouses where I grew vegetables and common medicinal herbs.

Along the way, Greene said, “Gretchen told me about the conversation out at that Werewolf’s mansion. About you being a catalyst or nexus, and all of that.”

My expression must have expressed my exasperation, because she burst out laughing.

“You’re not serious, are you?” I asked.

“Oh, the look on your face. Hell, I don’t know, but what I think doesn’t matter. That’s why I wanted to meet with you. Maddy Crowell thinks you are, and that’s what matters.”

“Who in hell is Maddy Crowell?”

“The leader of the Bluegrass Coven.”

“Oh, sweet Goddess. Where did she get that idea?” I looked at Gretchen. “Does she have a spy out at Vance’s? Or did you tell her?”

Gretchen shook her head. “Actually, I heard about it from Shawna, who heard it from a spy inside the Bluegrass Coven. But when I met you at Vance’s, I didn’t know you were the person she was talking about.”

“Things are a bit twisted, dear,” Greene said. “I don’t think you were introduced to me that day at the mall, and if you were, I wasn’t paying attention. I had other things on my mind.”

I took a deep breath. “Would you ladies care for some tea? I think I need to sit down to hear this.”

I led them to the cottage, where I made tea, set out some banana bread, and sat down.

“Okay, let’s start with who is Maddy Crowell—other than being daft and leader of a bunch of pyromaniacal, psychotic hillbillies—and why I should care.”

Greene took a bite of banana bread and said, “This is really quite good.” Then she took a sip of tea, and finally, before I strangled her, said, “Maddy Crowell is a very powerful witch, about a hundred and fifty years old, and she’s been running things up in the hills since the end of the nineteenth century. The Bluegrass Coven has always been pretty strong, with maybe two hundred members when the veils shredded.” She took another sip of her tea. “Maybe quicker than the rest of us, she figured out that we were in a whole new world. When the first witch-hunts and lynchings started, she took a couple of circles of her strongest witches and went into the
